bride getting married at Fort Fisher, North Carolina

Summary

The elopement was very simple, they told me the date, time, and location of their wedding. Cedric wanted to do a first look near their beach house, then newlywed photos at Fort Fisher. We went to their ceremony after where they had set up benches and a large cross as their arbor or wedding altar. Her dress was absolutely gorgeous, his, equally dapper. We had family photos and we were on our way.

Why get married at Fort Fisher?

Fort Fisher is a high key spot for couples who love the beach, history, and outdoor vibes. Located just south of Wilmington, it’s got epic ocean views, pristine dunes, and a relaxed feel that makes for amazing wedding photos. How to get married at Fort Fisher, NC?

  1. Apply for a Permit: Since Fort Fisher is a state park, you’ll need to get a special event permit from the NC Department of Natural and Cultural Resources. Call their office or apply online to secure your date. There may be fees depending on the size of your event.
  2. Choose Your Ceremony Spot: Fort Fisher offers multiple scenic areas—whether you want to get married right on the beach, with the dunes in the background, or even on the grounds near the Fort Fisher historic site.
  3. Set Up Vendors: You’ll need to book your own photographer (someone who knows how to work that beach light!), caterers, and possibly a DJ. Make sure they’re familiar with outdoor venues and can handle sandy conditions.
  4. Book Accommodations Nearby: Since Fort Fisher is a bit off the beaten path, suggest nearby hotels or vacation rentals for your guests, like in Kure Beach or Carolina Beach.

What you need to know about getting married at Fort Fisher?

Weather: Beach weddings are awesome, but keep an eye on the weather! Peak season is in the spring or fall when temperatures are perfect, but summer can get hot and windy.

Guests: If you’re inviting guests, make sure they’re down for a beach experience—meaning sandals, barefoot, and breezy attire.

Ceremony Details: Bring chairs, arches, or a simple setup (or go minimalist) to create your wedding space. Be mindful that this is a public area, so you may need to be flexible with beachgoers around.

When is the best time to get married at Fort Fisher?

The best times of year to plan your wedding at Fort Fisher are April through June and September through early November. These months offer cooler temps and lower chances of rain, making it a lit time for outdoor ceremonies.

If you’re set on a summer wedding, just remember to plan for shade and hydration because North Carolina can get extra hot and humid. Aim for early morning or late afternoon ceremonies to avoid the heat.
