How Do You Get Married in Madison, WI?
Here’s your checklist:
- Fill out a marriage license form.
- Get an appointment at the Dane County Clerk’s Office.
- Bring a valid photo ID, driver’s license, or passport.
- Bring a certified copy of your birth record.
- Bring proof of Social Security (no need for the actual card).
- Bring a document showing your current physical address (driver’s license, utility bill, lease, etc.).
- Set up an appointment with an officiant.
- Attend the ceremony with your partner and 2 witnesses.
- Sign the marriage license.
- Have the officiant file the license.

How to Get a Dane County Marriage License
First, you’ll need to schedule an appointment at the Dane County Clerk’s Office. Remember that all marriage license applications are processed virtually via Zoom.

Requirements:
• Complete a Marriage License Application.
• Provide a Valid Photo ID, Driver’s License, or Passport.
• Provide Proof of Social Security.
• Upload a Certified Copy of Your Birth Record (PDF or JPEG Files Work Best).
• Provide a Document Showing Your Current Physical Address.
• $120 License Fee (Payable by Credit or Debit Card).
Notes:
• You must schedule your marriage license appointment no more than 60 days before your wedding date.
• Apply at least 4 full days before your wedding date to avoid a $25 waiver fee. The license will be issued on the 4th calendar day after your application and is valid for 60 days.
• If you’ve been previously married, upload proof of how the last marriage ended (Judgment of Divorce, Death Certificate, or Legal Annulment).
