In September 2024, Hurricane Helen, DECIMATED my client's chances to get married in Asheville. Her wedding was literally in a week and it was absolutely dangerous for her and fiance, their guests, and wedding vendors to travel to Asheville.

So. My assistant and I started looking for Airbnb Wedding Venues in North Carolina. We sent at least 50+ wedding venues that matched my couples taste. We found 3 absolutely gorgeous, luxury AirBnBs that fit her style and vibe.

Out of this necessity, come out this resource.

Parkton Outdoor Venue

My client really loves a beautiful garden in front of the house. It really gives off that Southern Luxury feel.

Kenwood Villa

I love how tucked in the woods this is. The owner responded to them, unfortunately there were some restrictions. It's usually the size of the wedding party is the most concern. I do hear from wedding venues that the rentals get trashed during the reception. Which I totally get.

This one has a ton of spaces. I wouldn't call it luxury though, I wish I had better photos from them to be honest.

Luxury Oceanfront Rental

Pool, 3 decks, a ton of space, beach front for ceremonies. The only thing is that there arent a ton of space for the ceremony. You could do it at the either ends of the pool. But if you're not too worried about that, this might be the place for you.

VRBO

How to tell when the VRBO owner does not do events?

If you want to do you own research in Vrbo, please scroll down to "House Rules" and read the Events Section: They'll usually have something written like "No events allowed" See pic below

No Events Allowed

why shouldn't you do airbnb Wedding?

I was reading through reddit, a 3 year old post saying that couples have experienced owners canceling their wedding a year in advance. Here's why you should avoid renting an AirBnB for your wedding.

  • Cancellations. VRBO + AirBnB reserve owners the right to forfeit the date despite having fully paid for their 3 day rental.
  • Aren't transparent. There's another redditor saying there were a ton of rentals that do not allow weddings and events at their rentals simply because it will take too much toll on the house. Guests can drink and be rowdy and possibly break things.
  • Lack of Rentals. There's also the headache of renting chairs, tents, tables, silverware, dance floors, etc. This may turnoff some but remember that many wedding venues do not offer that.
  • Book longer. People have wished that they have stayed a little longer, maybe 3-4 days prior to the wedding, at the AirBnB which would definitely added to the cost.
  • Contracts. Last, many owners do not really take weddings seriously. There's no contract to sign to make sure that they do not cancel or double book them for that date. Wedding venues do.
  • Be mindful of the neighbors.
  • Can only hold a limited number of guests.
  • Limited parking spaces. It's the worst issue but it was a slight issue at a beach house we once rented.

If these doesn't turn you off and you absolutely must have a wedding there, then head on.

Why Should you do an airbnb Wedding

Here's a list of reasons why you should do an Airbnb wedding.

  • AirBnb rentals are cost effective. They can lodge 16+ people which, if you have help, you might be able to save thousands of dollars doing so.
  • Convenient. If you want to be closer to family, or if you have a parents/grandparents who might need assistance, this is a good way keep them close.
  • Airbnbs are intimate. This is perfect if you have very short guest list. 20-50 max guests. Definitely ask the owner about the maximum
  • Stress-free. If you want something relaxing, without having to stress with too many wedding vendors, contracts, invoices, hours of consultations, wedding themes, etc.
  • Unique wedding venues. You can have a manor, mansion, beach house, farm house, a house with a pool, golf view, mountain view, etc.

How to plan an Airbnb Wedding

Planning an Airbnb wedding might sound a bit different than using a traditional venue, but it’s easy to pull off with the right steps. Here’s how you can tie the knot at an Airbnb in North Carolina:

1. Find the Perfect Airbnb or VRBO

Start by searching for properties that allow events or weddings. Be sure to read the listing description carefully to see if weddings are allowed. Filter for homes with enough space for your guest count, both for the ceremony and overnight accommodations.

Check out my curated list of Airbnb and VRBO options to get started!

2. Contact the Host

Once you find a property, contact the host to confirm if weddings or small events are allowed. Be transparent about your guest list, whether you’ll have outside vendors, and any special requirements like parking or decor. Some hosts may have restrictions on noise or decorations, so it’s important to have that conversation upfront.

3. Book Your Date Early

Airbnb and VRBO properties, especially in wedding hotspots like Asheville or Wilmington, get booked quickly. Lock in your date early—ideally, 6 to 12 months in advance—so you have plenty of time to plan the details.

4. Hire Your Vendors

Unlike traditional venues, you’ll need to organize everything from rentals to catering on your own. Start by locking in your photographer (that’s me!) at Pink Penguin Studios, florist Sol, and wedding planner/coordinator Devon. For officiants, reach out to me, and I’ll connect you with Fia or Will.

Many local vendors like caterers, DJs, and rentals are willing to travel to your Airbnb location, especially if they’re already based in North Carolina.

5. Obtain Your Marriage License

You’ll need a marriage license from the county where you’ll be married. In North Carolina, you can get your license at any county courthouse, but check specific requirements for where the Airbnb is located. Make sure to apply ahead of time, and don’t forget to bring all the required documents, like identification and proof of age.

6. Prepare for the Day

Once the big day arrives, make sure all your logistics are set—where will your guests park? Do you need to rent extra chairs or lighting? Have a backup plan if the weather turns bad, especially for outdoor weddings. You may want to hire a day-of coordinator (like Devon!) to keep everything running smoothly.

7. Enjoy the Moment!

The best part about an Airbnb wedding? You get to soak it all in with your closest fam in a relaxed, intimate setting. Plus, you can stay overnight at the venue with your guests and continue the celebration without rushing off to a hotel.

Frequently asked Questions

Can you host a wedding at an Airbnb in North Carolina?

Yes! Not a lot of Airbnb hosts allow small weddings on their property, but it’s essential to get permission from the host first. Be upfront about your event and any extra guests you plan to have. Always check the listing’s rules and house policies.

What are the guest limits for an Airbnb wedding?

Most Airbnbs in North Carolina have strict guest limits to ensure the property remains in good condition. Some homes allow a few additional day guests, but large events may require renting a property with enough space for everyone, including parking.

Do Airbnb weddings in North Carolina require permits?

It depends on the location and size of your wedding. Some towns or counties may require a permit for events with more than a specific number of guests or for using public spaces. It’s a good idea to check local regulations before planning.

Is an Airbnb wedding cheaper than a traditional venue?

Airbnb weddings can often save money, especially for intimate gatherings. However, costs for rentals, event services, and possible additional fees (like cleaning or property damage deposits) can add up. Compare Airbnb prices with local venues to find the best fit for your budget.

Can I bring outside vendors to an Airbnb wedding?

Most Airbnb hosts are flexible about allowing outside vendors such as caterers, photographers, and florists. However, it’s essential to confirm with the host beforehand, as some properties have restrictions or preferred vendors.

Are there any restrictions on decorations or noise?

Many Airbnbs have rules about decorations to prevent damage to the property (e.g., no nails or tape on walls). Noise restrictions may also apply, especially in residential areas. Always communicate with your host about your plans to avoid any issues.

Can we stay overnight after the wedding?

Yes! One of the perks of an Airbnb wedding is that you and your guests can often stay overnight. This makes it convenient for out-of-town guests or those who don’t want to drive after the celebration.

What happens if it rains?

For outdoor Airbnb weddings, it’s essential to have a backup plan in case of rain. Consider properties that have covered areas, tents, or spacious indoor areas that can be transformed into a wedding space if needed.

How far in advance should I book an Airbnb for my wedding?

Airbnb properties in popular wedding destinations in North Carolina, such as Asheville or Wilmington, can get booked up quickly—sometimes a year or more in advance. Booking early is key to securing your dream location.

Can I have a destination wedding at an Airbnb in North Carolina?

Absolutely! Many couples choose Airbnbs in scenic locations like the Blue Ridge Mountains or Outer Banks for a destination wedding. Just make sure to coordinate travel and accommodation logistics for your guests.
