They've got a bunch of ferries that'll take you around, and it's a smooth ride. So, at the end of Hwy. 421, there's the Southport – Fort Fisher ferry. We like using it to get over to the charming little town of Southport.
We enjoy hanging out there, but sometimes, we just ride the ferry for the heck of it. It's a relaxed 25-minute boat journey, and it's perfect for spotting dolphins and birds. You've got options, too – you can stay in your car, stroll around the ferry, or kick back in the top viewing room.
The ferry runs all day, and it's just 7 bucks for the car. Not too shabby!
FORT FISHER STATE RECREATION
Let me share with you my take on Fort Fisher State Recreation Area. It's one of my top picks within North Carolina State Parks. When I need a perfect beach day, I head here, and it's a breeze to find at the end of Hwy. 421.
Just to clarify, it's not the historic site, but a legit beach park where I can relax, enjoy the sun, and surf the waves.

While the big boys like Krispy Kreme and Dunkin' are around, you've got to sink your teeth into the local donut scene. The two gems I'm dishing about are Britts Donuts and Wake N' Bake.
Britts Donuts, right on the Carolina Beach Boardwalk, is like a time capsule to 1939. It's got the classics – those irresistible glazed donuts that are nothing short of legendary.
Oh, and don't forget to set the alarm because the lines can get wild, and you don't want to miss out on these melt-in-your-mouth goodies.
Fort Fisher State Historic Site
Nestled at the southern tip of Hwy. 421, right by the aquarium and the State Park, lies the remarkable Fort Fisher State Historic Site. It's like stepping back in time to the Civil War era.
This coastal fortress held a pivotal role, being the last defense that ensured supplies reached General Robert E. Lee's army. The moment this fort fell, the whole supply chain unraveled, and the war reached its conclusion.
Fort Fisher Aquarium
