Planning to get married in New Jersey? We've got you covered with a detailed, easy-to-follow guide to ensure your special day goes off without a hitch. From gathering the right documents to signing the final forms, follow these steps to obtain your New Jersey marriage license.

STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE: HOW TO GET MARRIED IN NEW JERSEY

1. GATHER THE NECESSARY DOCUMENTATION

Before you head to the courthouse, make sure you have all the required documents:

  • Valid Photo ID: Driver’s license, passport, or state ID.
  • Proof of Residency: Utility bill, lease, or bank statement.
  • Previous Marriages: If applicable, bring proof of dissolution (divorce decree or death certificate).
  • Social Security Number: For both parties.
  • Parent Information: Names, addresses, and mothers’ maiden names of both parties’ parents.
  • Application Fee: $28 fee.

NOTE: Any documents in a foreign language must be accompanied by a certified English translation.

Having these documents ready will streamline the process and prevent delays.

2. VISIT THE LOCAL REGISTRAR’S OFFICE TO APPLY

Both parties must appear in person at the registrar's office in the municipality where the marriage will take place. Here’s what you need to do:

  • Complete the Application Form: You can get this form from the Local Registrar’s office or their website. Do not sign it before visiting the office. You must sign the application under oath in the presence of the issuing authority.
  • Schedule Your Visit: Plan to go to the registrar's office at least one month before your wedding date.
  • Application Fee: Fees vary by municipality, so check the specific cost beforehand.
  • Waiting Period: There’s a mandatory 72-hour waiting period after you submit your application before the license is issued.

3. COMPLETE THE APPLICATION AND WAIT

At the registrar’s office, you will:

  • Fill Out the Application: Provide all required information and documents.
  • Pay the Fee: Confirm the amount with your local registrar.
  • Wait 72 Hours: This is a state-mandated waiting period before you can pick up your license.

Note that there is no waiting period for a remarriage if you provide proof of the existing marriage.

Plan accordingly to ensure you have the license well before your wedding day.

4. PICK UP YOUR MARRIAGE LICENSE

After the 72-hour waiting period:

  • Return to the Registrar's Office: Collect your marriage license.
  • Ensure Accuracy: Double-check all the information on the license.

5. GET MARRIED AND COMPLETE THE PAPERWORK

On your wedding day:

  • Bring the License: Ensure it’s at the ceremony.
  • Officiant’s Role: The officiant will fill out part of the license.
  • Witness Signatures: You need two witnesses to sign the license.
  • Mail It Back: The officiant will mail the completed license to the local registrar.

6. REMARRIAGE

For couples who are already married, you can reaffirm your vows by registering a remarriage. The process is the same as applying for a marriage license, but you must provide proof of your existing marriage. There is no 72-hour waiting period for a remarriage.

CONGRATULATIONS!

Celebrate your new journey together! Remember, your marriage is official once the completed license is recorded.
