HOW DO YOU GET MARRIED IN ALLENTOWN, PA?

Here's your checklist.

  1. Complete the Marriage License Application Online or In-Person

  4. Bring Proof of Social Security (card, pay stub, or tax form)

HOW TO GET A MARRIAGE LICENSE IN ALLENTOWN


First, you'll need to complete the marriage license application and schedule an in-person appointment.


COMPLETING THE APPLICATION

There are two ways to complete your marriage license application:

  1. Online: Apply for a marriage license online here.
  2. In-Person: Visit the Marriage License Section located on the First Floor of the Lehigh County Courthouse, 455 Hamilton Street, Allentown, PA.

IN-PERSON APPOINTMENT


Both applicants must appear in person to complete the application process and sign all documents.

GETTING MARRIED IN ALLENTOWN

You have two ways of getting married in Allentown:

  1. Schedule an appointment at the Courthouse
  2. Hire an Officiant to perform your ceremony



GETTING MARRIED AT THE COURTHOUSE

Once you get your marriage license, you can schedule a time with the magistrate at the courthouse.


Requirements:

  • Appointment at the courthouse
  • Your Marriage License
  • Your partner and two witnesses

Notes:

  • A courthouse official or magistrate will officiate the ceremony.
  • You can request a certified copy of your marriage certificate from the Marriage License Section for a fee. This certificate serves as proof of your marriage.


During the ceremony, the courthouse official and witnesses will sign the marriage license, making your marriage legally valid.

GETTING MARRIED USING AN OFFICIANT

You do not have to get married in a courthouse. Once you get a marriage license from the Register of Wills, you can hire an officiant to elope at your desired location.


After the Ceremony:

The officiant will file the signed marriage license with the Marriage License Section to officially record your marriage.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS


WHEN IS THE OFFICE OPEN?

The Marriage License/Passport office is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. Note: No applications can be processed after 4:00 PM.


WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF MARRIAGE LICENSES IN PENNSYLVANIA?

  • Self-Uniting Marriage License: Does not require an officiant to solemnize the marriage.
  • Traditional Marriage License: Requires an officiant to solemnize the marriage.


HOW LONG IS THE MARRIAGE LICENSE VALID?

A marriage license is valid for 60 days from the date it is issued.


WHAT ABOUT PRIOR MARRIAGES?

Applicants who have been previously married and divorced must provide a certified copy of the Decree of Divorce. A widow or widower must provide the date of death of their former spouse. An additional $10.00 per Decree of Divorce will be added to the standard $80.00 Marriage License Fee.


WHAT ARE THE AGE REQUIREMENTS TO MARRY?

Applicants must be 18 years of age or older to apply for a marriage license.


WHAT ARE THE FEES FOR A MARRIAGE LICENSE?

The fees for a Marriage License in Lehigh County, including Pennsylvania taxes and surcharges, are as follows:

  • Computer Fee: $29.00
  • Lehigh County Fee: $25.50
  • Pennsylvania Writ Tax: $0.50
  • Court Technology Fee: $5.00
  • Act 151 Surcharge: $10.00
  • Act 222 Surcharge: $10.00
  • TOTAL: $80.00
  • Additional Fee per Divorce Decree: $10.00
