Here’s your step-by-step of how to get married in Madison, Wisconsin, here’s your checklist:

  1. Fill out a marriage license form.
  2. Get an appointment at the Dane County Clerk’s Office.
  3. Bring a valid photo ID, driver’s license, or passport.
  4. Bring a certified copy of your birth record.
  5. Bring proof of Social Security (no need for the actual card).
  6. Bring a document showing your current physical address (driver’s license, utility bill, lease, etc.).
  7. Set up an appointment with an officiant.
  8. Attend the ceremony with your partner and 2 witnesses.
  9. Sign the marriage license.
  10. Have the officiant file the license.

How to Get a Dane County Marriage License

First, you’ll need to schedule an appointment at the Dane County Clerk’s Office. Remember that all marriage license applications are processed virtually via Zoom.

Complete a Marriage License Application.

Provide a Valid Photo ID, Driver’s License, or Passport.

Provide Proof of Social Security.

Upload a Certified Copy of Your Birth Record (PDF or JPEG Files Work Best).

Provide a Document Showing Your Current Physical Address.

$120 License Fee (Payable by Credit or Debit Card).

Notes:

• You must schedule your marriage license appointment no more than 60 days before your wedding date.

• Apply at least 4 full days before your wedding date to avoid a $25 waiver fee. The license will be issued on the 4th calendar day after your application and is valid for 60 days.

• If you’ve been previously married, upload proof of how the last marriage ended (Judgment of Divorce, Death Certificate, or Legal Annulment).
