Congratulations, fam! I’m so hyped that you’re planning your wedding in Grand Rapids!

Here’s your checklist:

  1. Fill out a marriage license application.
  2. Get an appointment at the Kent County Clerk’s Office.
  3. Bring a valid photo ID, driver’s license, or passport.
  4. Bring a certified copy of your birth certificate.
  5. Provide Social Security Numbers for Both Applicants.
  6. Pay the marriage license fee: $20 for Kent County residents, $30 for non-residents.
  7. Set Up an Appointment with an Officiant.
  8. Attend the Ceremony With Your Partner and 2 Witnesses.
  9. Sign the marriage license.
  10. Have the officiant file the license.

How to Get a Kent County Marriage License

First, you’ll need to schedule an appointment at the Kent County Clerk’s Office.

Requirements:

  • Complete a marriage license application.
  • Provide a valid photo ID, driver’s license, or passport.
  • Provide a Certified Copy of Your Birth Certificate.
  • Provide Social Security Numbers for both applicants.
  • Pay the marriage license fee: $20 for Kent County residents, $30 for non-residents.

Notes:

At least one applicant must be a Kent County resident, or both may be non-Michigan residents getting married in Kent County.

The marriage license is valid for 33 days from the application date.

There is a 3-day waiting period before the license can be picked up, and it must be picked up in person.

If previously married, bring proof of how the last marriage ended (divorce judgment, death certificate, or legal annulment).

Then head to the Kent County Clerk’s Office at the date and time of your appointment:

Getting Married in Grand Rapids, MI

You have 2 ways of getting married in Grand Rapids:

  1. Hire an Officiant to Create Your Ceremony
  2. Schedule a Civil Wedding Ceremony at the 63rd District Court

Getting Married at the 63rd District Court

Once you get your marriage license, you can schedule a time with a judge or magistrate to hold your ceremony.

Requirements:

Your marriage license.

Your partner and two witnesses (18 or older).

A $10 fee paid on the day of the ceremony.

Notes:

Marriage ceremonies are performed on-site at the 63rd District Court on Thursday afternoons.

Appointments must be scheduled ahead of time, and the court’s calendar typically fills up about 2 months in advance.

The court does not provide witnesses, so make sure to bring your own.
