How to Get a Columbia County Marriage License

First, you’ll need to schedule an appointment at the Columbia County Clerk’s Office.

Call (608) 742-9654 to Schedule Your Appointment. Remember, they’re located at 112 E. Edgewater Street, Portage, WI 53901 (Not at the Courthouse).

Requirements:

  • Complete a marriage form.
  • Provide a valid photo ID, driver’s license, or passport, and proof of social security.
  • Both you and your partner must apply in person at the Columbia County Clerk’s Office.
  • $85 Fee (Cash or Card).

Notes:

  • Applications must be made at least 3 full days before the license is issued. Plan accordingly, especially since they don’t issue licenses on weekends or holidays.
  • You can request a waiver for the 3-day waiting period for an additional $25 fee, but this must be done at least 3 days in advance and for a good reason.
  • A certified birth certificate is required for all applicants.
  • If you’ve been previously married, bring your final judgment of divorce, a death certificate, or a court annulment decree.
  • Proof of residency is required. If you’ve moved in the last 30 days, be prepared to prove your previous address.
  • The wedding date must be set before you apply for the license.
  • If one of the applicants doesn’t speak English, you must provide a certified translator who isn’t a relative or friend.
