10 Tips for Your Washington DC Engagement Session

May 14, 2025

An engagement session is more than just photos—it’s a chance to celebrate your love story and get comfortable in front of the camera before your big day. Here are my top tips for making the most of your DC engagement session.

1. Choose the Right Time

Golden hour (the hour before sunset) offers the most flattering light. In DC, this means:

  • Spring/Fall: Around 6-7 PM
  • Summer: Around 7-8 PM
  • Winter: Around 4-5 PM

2. Consider the Location

DC offers incredible variety:

  • Lincoln Memorial - Classic and iconic
  • Georgetown - Charming cobblestone streets
  • National Mall - Monuments and open spaces
  • Dumbarton Oaks - Romantic gardens
  • Old Town Alexandria - Waterfront charm

3. Coordinate, Don’t Match

Wear colors that complement each other without being identical. Soft, neutral tones photograph beautifully against DC’s architecture.

4. Bring a Change of Outfit

I always recommend two looks—one casual, one dressy. This gives variety to your gallery.

5. Avoid Busy Tourist Times

Weekday sessions or early morning weekend sessions help avoid crowds at popular monuments.

6. Embrace the Weather

Overcast days actually provide beautiful, even lighting. Don’t cancel for clouds!

7. Be Yourselves

The best photos come from genuine moments. Don’t be afraid to laugh, whisper, and be yourselves.

8. Trust the Process

I’ll guide you through poses and prompts. Just relax and enjoy the experience!

9. Plan for Permits

Some locations require photography permits. I handle all of this for my clients.

10. Have Fun!

This is a celebration of your love. Enjoy every moment!
